What is Solar System (Sormandal)?

The solar system is the combination of planets, satellites, comets, asteroids, meteoroids, Draft planets and other space objects, which revolves around the sun as well as around the planets/dwarf planets in their orbits.

The Sun

The Sun is a Star, located at the center of our solar system. Sun is the Biggest body in our solar system. Its Diameter is 13 million 92 thousand kilometers ( i.e., .109 times Earth). It is 99.86% of the total mass of the Solar System. Its rotation on its axis is Counter Clockwise. It is our primary source of energy because, in the sun, Nuclear fusion Occurs in which 4 H (Hydrogen) atom fuses to 1 He (Helium ) atom. During this process, it also releases Energy in the form of gamma rays and some other particles in the form of neutrinos. Every second in its core, the Sun fuses 620 million metric tons of hydrogen.

Gas Percentage/Atmosphere –

As we know The Sun is the Gas Giant and mostly made up of Hydrogen and Helium, so there are approximately (as hydrogen continuously fuses to helium) 70% of Hydrogen, 28 % of Helium and carbon, nitrogen, oxygen 1.5% and other elements like Neon, Iron, Magnesium, Silicon, Sulfur 0.5%

The Planets

The Planet is a celestial body that revolves around the sun, maintaining its hydro-static equilibrium (nearly round/spherical shape) and has cleared its neighborhood around its orbit. Currently, there are eight planets (8) in our solar system named as  Mercury (Budh in Hindi), Venus (Sukra),  Earth (Prithvi),  Mars (Mangal), Jupiter (Brahaspati),  Saturn (Sani), Uranus (Arun) and Neptune (Varun).

Before 2006 Pluto is also considered as the 9th planet of our solar system but after 2006 Pluto is removed from the category of planets because of some reasons and now Pluto is a Dwarf planet.

The Planets are divided into two categories –
1. Inner Planets and
2. Outer Planets

1. Inner Planets

  • Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars comes in this category.
  • Inner Planets are also called terrestrial planets
  • They are mostly made up of rocky material
  • They are smaller in size as compared to outer planets.
  • Inner planets have fewer moons as compared to outer planets.
  • Major gases – Carbon dioxide, Nitrogen, etc

2. Outer Planets

  • Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune comes in this category.
  • Outer Planets are also called Jovian planets.
  • There are mostly made up of Hydrogen and Helium Gases; hence these are also called as Gas Giants (Jupiter and Saturn are called Gas
    Giants whereas Uranus and Neptune are called Ice Giants due to low temperature).
  • They are Larger as compared to Inner planets.
  • Outer planets have many moons as compared to inner planets.
  • Major gases – Hydrogen and Helium.

1. The Mercury Planet

The Mercury is the closest planet from the sun. It is also the smallest planet among all the other planets of our solar system, and hence there is no natural satellite or moon on this planet. As we already discussed above that it is an inner or terrestrial planet, so it has a solid surface means it is a rocky planet.

The Mercury rotates anticlockwise/Counterclockwise (west to East) on its own axis. One Day on Mercury is equaled to 58.6 earth days and one year equaled to 88 earth days.

Well if you say, Mercury, then you are wrong, if you say the hottest planet is Venus then you are absolutely right. But one question can be arises that how it can be possible? As we all know that mercury is closer than Venus, from the sun, so how it can be possible that the hottest planet is Venus? The reason behind it is -Mercury has no atmosphere whereas Venus has an atmosphere in which the carbon dioxide (CO2) gas present in major quantity, which causes the Greenhouse effect in Venus.

2. The Venus Planet​

The Venus is the second closest planet from the sun. As we discussed in the case of mercury that Venus is the hottest planet because, it has an atmosphere, that mostly contains carbon dioxidewhich causes the greenhouse effect. Like Mercury planet, there is no any natural satellite/moonin the planet Venus. It is also an inner or terrestrial planet, so it has a solid surface means it is a rocky planet.

The interesting fact about Venus is that it rotates clockwise (ie. from East to West) about its own axis.

One Day on Venus is equalled to 243 earth days and one year equalled to 225 earth days. That means one day on Venus is larger than its one year. It is also called the morning and evening starbecause it can clearly be seen before sunrise and after sunset. 3. The Earth Planet​

The Earth is the Third closest planet from the sun. We are very familiar with our home planet Earth, the perfect place for life. There is
one natural satellite of earth ie. Moon.
The distance between Sun and Earth is called one Astronomical Unit and it is approximately equal to 150 million Km (93 million miles).
The closest planet from the Earth is Venus which is also called the sister of Earth or Twins. Most of the planet is cover with water and
hence also called the Blue Planet. Its tilt on its own axis is 23.5 degree.

4. The Mars Planet​

5. The Jupiter Planet​

The biggest planet in our solar system is Jupiter and is the Fifth planet from the sun. It is an outer/Jovian planet, mostly made up of
hydrogen and helium, hence also called Gas Giant.
The distance between Sun and Jupiter is 5.2 AU or 778 million Km (484 million miles). The red spot on this planet is actually a storm
which is approximately the size of Earth.
Here one day is equal to 10 hours that means it is the fastest rotating planet about their own axis, hence one day on Jupiter is very small
as compared to other planets. One year on Jupiter is equaled to 12 earth years.
Currently, it has 69 natural satellites out of which Ganymede is the biggest satellite of this planet and also the biggest satellite of our
solar system. Currently, the Juno spacecraft or artificial satellite is orbiting Jupiter. It also has a faint ring system.

6. The Saturn Planet​

The Second biggest planet in our solar system is Saturn and is the Sixth planet from the sun. It is an outer/Jovian planet, mostly made
up of hydrogen and helium, hence also called Gas Giant. Whenever we hear Saturn then one picture in our mind comes that, the planet
with rings – Saturn has a strong ring system made-up of seven rings.
The distance between Sun and Saturn is 9.5 AU or 1.4 billion Km (886 million miles).
Here one day is equal to 10.7 hours that means it is the second fastest rotating planet about their own axis, and one year is equal to 29
earth years (10,756 days).
Currently, it has 62 natural satellites out of which Titan is the biggest satellite of this planet.

7. The Uranus Planet​

The third biggest planet in our solar system is Uranus and is the seventh planet from the sun. It is an outer/Jovian planet, mostly made
up of hydrogen and helium, and due to the excess amount of methane (CH4), it is also called the green planet. Due to very far from the
sun, the temperature on the last two planets (Uranus and Neptune) are very low hence, they are also called as Ice Giants. Remember

The distance between Sun and Uranus is 19.19 AU or 2.9 billion Km (1.8 billion miles). Here one day is equal to 17 hours and one year
equals to 84 earth years ( 30,687 ).
Currently, it has 27 natural satellites out of which Titania is the biggest satellite of this planet. Voyager 2 is the only spacecraft visited
the Uranus.

8. The Neptune Planet​

The fourth biggest planet in our solar system is Neptune and is the Eighth planet from the sun. It is an outer/Jovian planet, mostly made
up of hydrogen and helium, and methane is present in its atmosphere. It is the farthest planet from the sun in our solar system.
The distance between Sun and Neptune is 30.1 AU or 4.5 billion Km (2.7 billion miles).
Currently, it has 14 natural satellites out of which Triton is the biggest satellite of this planet. It also has a faint ring systemVoyager 2
spacecraft has visited this planet.
